An ACW church for the Peninsula battles

The next in my Seven Days battles American Civil War games requires a church... specifically the Apostolic Presbyterian, Evangelist, Ecumenical, Methodist, 3rd Coming, Dunker Church of Lower Williamsburg.

Being in Cyprus the option to just buy a model church isn't really viable.   The post service is a lottery, only about half the stuff people order actually arrives.
I had no options but to have a go at a scratch build.  Cue the coffee stirrers...

A pretty straight forward build.

Removable roof, and the usual finger over the lens

Couldn't resist turning the steeple into a dice tower.

And added some graves for the boys to fight around.  Take away that steeple and it's a simple ACW weatherboard house.
Next step is the white coat and staining...
The church and dice tower

As a farmhouse...
The graveyard, fences and a sinister well...  I even have a bucket to add to that somewhere around here.  Looking good for Williamsburg
In situ on the table top, ready for the gallant defence of the 7th Virginia

Game Five: the Battle of Mühlbach's Hofe: Red vs Blue

Game Five: the Battle of Mühlbach's Hofe

Scenario 1  An Encounter  Battle

Its a simple line 'em up and let em go game... both sides face off across the valley.

Red Force

Maj-Gen Stuhl,
Chief of Staff, Colonel Inkontinenz
1st Brigade
Grenadier Guards
1st Foot
2nd Foot
Rifles company
Battery  Arrival on (? plus d6 turns)
2nd Brigade
3rd Foot
4th Foot (Detached and unavailable)
Red Hussars

Blue
Maj Gen Le Compte du Pompe
1st Brigade
Grenadier Regiment (2 Battalions)
1st du Ligne
2nd du Ligne
2nd Brigade
3rd du Ligne
4th du Ligne
Battery

Colonel Michel-Georges de Vique (the impressive Blue cavalry Commander) Blue Dragoon Guards
Blue 2nd Dragoons

Mühlbach's Hofe, and what a hofe it is...
Red Skirmishers rush to occupy the buildings

Blue skirmishers under a handsomely fat officer also make for the buildings
The Red main body arrives.
Colonel Michel-Georges de Vique appears with some of his dragoons out on the flank... giving Red something to think about.

Blue skirmishers seize the tall building and the wall line.
Blue get their gun deployed and the head of a column appears

But we can all relax.  The Red Hussars are here...

A Rifles group moves down slope to spoil Colonel Vique's day
The Blue gun starts to bombard the Red line

Blue Grenadiers head for the Red occupied farmhouse

The Red Line skirmishers defend valiantly

Hussars vs Dragoons.  It's a sea of fives.  The Red Officer is killed on a roll of ... 5...
Colonel Viques continues his charge into the skirmishing rifles

A massacre as yet more dragoons appear... and yes those two are unpainted...

Battle in the farmhouse.  The Blue Officer dominates

With the end of the line vulnerable Red form a square, but are now vulnerable to the cannon.  The Red line is threatened on both flanks and now has an enemy held strong point to its front.
And Blue now hold the buildings and wall line.
I could have continued, but clearly Red were in a bad position, so I decided that enough was enough.  Maj Gen Stuhl retreats to fight another day.
The Legion of Honour for our winners, the British Legion Club in Pelton for our losers...
To be honest it was that roll of fives that destroyed my morale, and the Hussars.  Actually those Hussars need some training!
Good game...

Game Four: Gut Althof: Red vs Blue

Game Four: Gut Althof

Gut Althof:  Attack an Objective
The young Lord
A young Officer in your force is a Viscount.  The mission is to keep him alive.  Dice for his character.
Blue have occupied a strong point on the flank of the main force with an elite battalion of Grenadiers.  In response Red have detached the 4th Foot to take the position.
Although this is a battalion level game I`m using my Company sized forces to represent it.  My forces are built with this in mind, the French "Blue" for instance have six groups, including Voltiguer and Grenadier groups.

Red 4th Foot
Captain James Dale (Stout)
Lieutenant Bernie Cribbins, Viscount Spitalfields  (Rash)
Sergeant Pete Butterworth  (Poltroon)
2 Groups Skirmishers
4 Groups Line

The Blue Guard Infantry
Regimento Monza Azul (The Blue Nuns)
Louis, Compte de Pantalones Status III  (Poseur)
Ensign Robin Askwith Status I  (Peeping Tom)
4 Groups Grenadiers
Lieutenant Nick Parsons  Status II  (Dilatory)
1 Groups Cacadores
(These are my Portuguese battalion for the Peninsular.
First time in action for these guys)

Gut Althof  a hilltop farm.
The young Viscount and his skirmishers appear

Turn out the farm is filled with four companies of Blue guards

Blue cacadores arrive, commanded by Nick Parsons?

Captain Dale and his snaking red column

The skirmishers get stuck into each other

Incident at the farmhouse as a kit inspection is begun by the martinet in command

Captain dale gets the 4th into line

The Red Skirmishers do well in avoiding casualties,
but their young aristocratic Officer is shot through the chinstrap.

The Blue Cacadores are driven off

Blue prepare for the assault
And the first volley is a great one.  14 hits from the 4th.

Eight kills three shock.  That is two kills for each of the Blue Grenadier Companies.  But on risk to their Officers Blue roll a disaster.  both are killed.  Blue morale fails.

Red assault the Farm as Blue rout.  Hoorah for Brave Captain Dale, but awkward questions about the safety of the Young Viscount will follow.

The retreat to Corunna Dec 1808 to Jan 1809

On 23rd December 1808 Sir John Moore made his decision to retreat before the overwhelming French forces that were gathering against him.  My Peninsular campaign has reached the events of the retreat to Corunna, and will consist of a series of rearguard actions, before culminating in the big battle itself.

My Dawns and Departures style Corunna Map

My actual campaign map.   It's a big one!

The rearguard commander appointed by Sir John is Brigadier General Sebastian Urgent-Cummings, Earl of Fagg.

I will be using two forces as rearguard.  The 60th Rifles Company of Captain Quitte von Weißmehr, and the Light Company of Captain Quilp of the 4th Foot.

The French will have both a Dragoon force and a Light Column.  These forces will automatically replace any casualties for each game in the retreat, whilst the rearguard companies will decline through attrition.

Game One Sahagun

Game 1 Sahagun, 21 December 1808

To:   Captain Quitte von Weißmehr
60th Rifles
From: Lt. Gen Sir John Moore
Astorga, Dec 24th 1808

Ah, Qwinthy my dwear Chap.  It theems we must retweat.

Be a good German sausage fellow and take youwr Wrifles back over to Sahagwun.
Find out if the Fwench are there yet, number twypes etc...

The Wearguard will be commanded by Brigadier General Urgent-Cummings, the Earl of Fagg.
Weport to him on complweetion of your mwission.

Mwoore

Note from Chief of Staff:
Captain von Weißmehr,
approaching from the west take either (1) the old goat trail or (2) the road from Casa Hemorrhoidia.
The vinyards should offer you some cover.  A Squadron of the 15th Hussars under Lieutenant Hawtrey will be at your disposal.
Watch Hawtrey like a hawk.  He is a cad with the ladies.
One last thing...

Mission 8.  Find the missing banker.
Johannes Reece Morgue, Merchant of Vienna, is somewhere in the area of Sahagun.  He has a banker's draft, sufficient to present to the bankers at Lisbon and pay the lads their back money.
Johannes has a penchant for dressing as a lady of advanced years, and smoking enormous Havana cigars.  He insists on being addressed as Young Miss Johanna.
Rescue Young Miss Johanna and discover what she knows.

Carry on von Weißmehr.

Game 2 Astorga and the Blue Nun

Captain Quilp, 4th Foot
From: Lt. Gen Sir John Moore
Astorga, Dec 24th 1808

Ah, Quilliup,
How is youwr eyesight these days... Haw... Haw...Haw...

It will come as a shock that we will not be fwighting a bwattle here twooday.
The army will be retweating.
You will have the honour of being Wearguard here at Astworga.
A squadron of the 15th Hooussars will stand by you.
The Fwench will come over the mountains from Leon.

The Wearguard will be commanded by Brigadier General Urgent-Cummings, the Earl of Fagg.
Weport to him on complweetion of your mwission.

Gwood Luck owlde boy...

Mwoore

Note from Chief of Staff:
Captain Quilp,

You must hold the French with your company until nightfall or until you are outflanked. They will probably try to use the direct route westward over the Pine Ridge.  Choose your ground.  You can hold them at the fords of the Arroyo del Convento, or on the roads over the Pine Ridge.  Astorga will be fired as the Army withdraws.   A Squadron of the 15th Hussars under Lieutenant Hawtrey will be at your disposal.
One last thing...

The Sera Convent lies to the North of Astorga.  Send a small force to protect and escort our agent "the Blue Nun," to your position.  She is guarding a big box and has a mule to carry it. This box must be delivered to the main column after your mission to delay the French is complete.  Do not allow it to fall into the Enemy's hands.
More importantly do not entrust this mission to Hawtrey of the Hussars.  The Good Lord has not blessed him with  a natural intelligence, and he cannot be trusted with a lady, even an elderly nun.
I say... Ding Dong...old boy...
Do not allow your Force to be cut off and destroyed.

Desperate times Captain...

Orders from Captain Quilp

I shall send Lt. Wellard with the light company to escort the ‘nun’.
I will take half our line troops (two groups?) and take up a position in the treeline on Pine Tree Ridge, overlooking the fords. We will deploy in open order (individual groups) and harry the French, with ‘skirmish’ fire as they cross the fords.
The remainder of our force will take up a reserve position  at the junction of the two roads behind Pine Tree Ridge, under Sgt Postlethwaite. Here they will form line.
We will not attempt to make a stand in the woods but fall back on our reserves when pressed. The whole force will then reform line and hopefully cover the retreat of Wellard and the ‘nun.

Cpt. Quilp (4th Foot)
