En Garde: The Witchfinder General 1634, Scenario 1

Witchfinder General 1634 Scenario 1.

The Bishopric is being visited by King Charles' Witchfinder, a man appointed by the King's father, who had a dark interest in witchcraft.  Witchfinder Price has a large warband but for the purposes of the game it has been divided into three, one for each of the scenarios in Witchfinder.

The scene is the Queen's Head Inn, and the target of the Witchfinder is Mistress Quickly.  The Scenario I used is Defence...

DEFENCE

In this scenario, one side attempts to defend a strategic point at any cost and must wrest control of the objective.
(Mistress Quickly)

SET-UP

• Forces: The Witch Finder is attacking, looking for Mistress Quickly who has been accused of Witchcraft, and the patrons of the Inn are defending.   The defender's force is half the points value of the attacker's.
• Terrain: I`m using the Inn...
• Weather: Not inside
• Time of Day: Dusk
• Deployment: The defender deployed all of the Inn's patrons at tables... with my new scratch built barrels... The attacker deployed just inside the Inn door. The attacker used the Reserves rule keeping three thugs outside the door.

VICTORY
The side that controls the objective at the end of the game wins. To control the objective, there must be at least one friendly and no enemy models in contact with it.

The objective for the Witchfinder is Mistress Quickly.

The minor Objective is the Duel.  Both sides must declare and fight a duel during play, declaring this within 6" of the enemy.  +5 Victory points, +5 Honour points.

The Queen's Head Inn.  The walls have had stonework cladding added!

Some of the Inn's patrons gathered around a plot point!

The fat knight, I rolled a d6 - 5 He is almost unconcious with drink.  My home made barrels are dryng, needing a shade added..

Solomon Whitemoore entertains Mistress Quickly in a back room

The Witchfinder Vincent Price's men burst into the Inn heading for the back room.

The Witchfinder wins priority.  Figures move alternately as fighting begins.  As a Beguiling character the Witchfinder cannot be attacked until he attacks...

At the end of turn one three of the Witchfinder's men are down.  Two of these were in the first round of combat, including Quilp vs Feeble.  Quilp attacks with a thrust, 2d6  5+5 and his fight score of 3 for a 13.  Feeble rolls a 1 +1 plus his fight score of 2, but that double means he fumbles and drops his sword. The Witchfinder's warband fails its morale with 25% casualties and begins to waver...

The Witchfinder closes in on Bubbles.

Travers fires point blank at Quilp.  That roll of 4 is pretty poor. For shooting En Garde uses has a minus 6 to hit, and this is therefore a -2 hit score.  It needed to be 1 or more to hit.  Travers better start to worry as Quilp turns to him...

The Customers win priority and Quilp charges Travers.  With a shout of "He's Mine," Quilp declares the fight a duel.  No others can now intervene.  Quilp rolls the double 6+6, plus his fight score of 3.  Travers rolls the fumble and drops his musket.  Quilp bashes his brains in with his sword gaining +5VP and +5 Honour points according to the minor objective.

It's going badly for the Witchfinder.  Kinsky kills another of the thugs.

The Witchfinder turns his seedy attentions to Doll Tearsheet.  His roll of 6+4 plus his fight skill of 3 (13) is enough to kill the poor prostitute as he bashes her brains in with a crucifix.  Nice guy Vincent!

Ah, but the Witchfinder's warband begins to rout.  He runs for the door, where I suddenly remember he had reserves, and three of his men are just outside.

The fat knight finally rises from the table, but can`t get into the action as Vincent slips out of the door into the night...
With Scene 1 done the plot point can be claimed.  Captain Quilp finds the hat on the table and finds a hidden note in the inside band.  "Deliver 2 casks of ale to the ruined abbey."  It seems that the ruins of Finchale Abbey, down in the woods at the riverside, are the base camp for the Witch hunters.  Quilp will gather his men to have revenge for poor Doll Tearsheet.
Perhaps we will discover the dark secret behind the Witch Finder's presence in the County...
