Rendezvous with Destiny: Green Devil’s Last Stand

Scenario Five
Green Devil’s Last Stand
Background

With Allied forces closing in on the Northern side of town, the Fallschirmjäger prepare  to defend Carentan to the last man. An American victory here will secure the linkup between the invasion beaches; this cannot be allowed to happen.

Patrol Phase Deployment

Attack on an Objective, in COC.  The US and German initial Patrol Marker deployment options are shown on the image above.  The fourth German Jump-off Point must be in the objective building as illustrated.

US Briefing
The US player has eleven support points available.
German Briefing
The German player has five support points available.

From the Diary of Lt Harry "Bing" Crosby.
"The second platoon had to tackle the advance into Carentan.  This meant that W.C and Jack Benny would be on point.  I placed myself as Adjutant.  Battalion would support us with an M4 Sherman.  It seemed rude not to take the .50Cal and its jeep again, and we convinced Danny Kaye to bring a 3 platoon Squad up from reserve.  The Krauts are dug in here, in force.  It will be a tough fight."

101st in Carentan
The Game
The Germans take a Stug as Support.  They also get Leutnant Fritz Spritz from Colditz as an additional Big Man III.

The Americans take an MMG, an M4 Sherman and an additional squad with Big Man II.

The Game

The edge of Carentan, that is just about every 10mm building I have.

The patrol phase,.  US encroachment on the German left

The Jump off Points are determined.  Its a strong defensive position, but the 101st have pushed along the hedgerow.

Master Sergeant W.C Fields gets his Abbott's First Squad down.  Assisted by the presence of an Adjutant he joins them.

He sites the .50Cal at the L junction of the hedgerow.  It's a beast of a weapon

Next down is Second Squad and Sgt Lou Costello.

Sgt Danny Kaye and his 2nd Platoon Squad dash across the open field.  But the Fallschirmjäger start to get troops into those houses and gardens and he loses two men.

The .50 Cal supports Danny and hammers at the buildings.

But those 2nd Platoon boys are taking casualties.

The Germans bring on an oddly painted STuG.

Problems with the defence though.  From the Chateau Fritz Splitz and his boys cant quite get a shot at Danny.

Danny assaults the building, but fails his survival roll.

In a game of odd dice rolls this German one was at least usable by the separate Fallschirmjäger teams.

Costello splits his squad sending the BAR team into the building on his flank, whilst he takes the riflemen.

End of turn and it starts raining.  Visibility 18cm.

The .50 Cal hammers out in support

The next US roll they hold the initiative

And the third US roll is the famous Catch-All.

Costello takes the three to lead his Riflemen forward after his BAR team shoot them in.

Costello's assault is exemplary

The STuG withdraws as German morale collapses.

But W.C has to order Abbott's Squad to advance to support Costello.  We will have to keep an eye on Abbott.

Leutnant Fritz Splitz from Colditz, surrounded, surrenders to the 101st.  These are Minifigs 10mm, very nice!

Rendezvous with Destiny is done.  There is a bonus scenario covering the battle of Bloody Gulch, which I may cover at some time, although I suspect that it would make a complete IABSM mini campaign on its own.
