I`m enjoying some Men of Bronze games, but one of the things I've discovered is that the single based figures are just too inconvenient compared to my Lion rampant 3/2/1 bases. MoB is however similar to Dux Bellorum, in that there is no casualty removal, and so I settled on three bases per unit, with the central one counting as the "Leader," adding a dice frame to display the current Courage score.
No overlap in this picture, but the dice frame can be seen for these Drilled Hoplites at Courage 5. |
So, it looks like next year's project will be to extend my hoplite armies for Men of Bronze by adding in a couple of additional enemy forces. I`m interested in the period of the Peloponnesian war, and since I spend most of my time here in Cyprus that will be my focus. The period of 431 to 404BC saw both Spartan and Athenian interests competing on the island, but in addition to this both the Phoenicians and the Persians had outposts here. Adding in some wandering mercenaries, trading Egyptians and Levant coastal raiders allows for a really diverse set up of armies.
It's not all about the figures however. A large part of the look for Men of Bronze is the terrain. It's not really a terrain heavy game, and although some of the scenarios dictate certain terrains the choice is limited to some key areas. That means that what terrain there is has to look classical.

Game terrain
1. No additional
2. One level hill
3. Swamp pond or spring
4. Grove of trees
5. Stone Wall
6. Two level hills
Additional Terrain I just feel I need to add
Temple
A flock of Goats (for the unexpected event roll)
An Olive grove or vineyard as an alternative "grove of trees."
City gates, for when you just have to have a Polis on table.
