The Fight on the Frontier. 1:1 Roman Cohort

The war along the frontier has been going well.  New Prefectus Nauseous Sextus could change that in an afternoon.  The Second cohort of the Batavians have marched north from Deva Victrix and established a marching fort on the road into the Brigantes territory, where the ridge line is broken by a steep valley.

Nauseous Sextus, a youthful, ode writing poet from Pompeii, and our new Prefectus, is the son of an important Senator.  The First Spear, a grim and sour old fellow named Infelix (Unhappy) summed up the new prefect's father as "an Impotent Senator."

Having been successful on the East coast, the cohort once again face the powerful Brigantes, lead on this coast by Kendoddix, their feisty and long winded leader.

There are six possible scenarios in this mini campaign, deliberately made to be typical of Simon Scarrow or Anthony Riches novels.  These occur in a random order, and the first game is "the Oak Grove."
  1. The Route North
  2. The Oppidum of Runcornix
  3. The burning village at Huytonix
  4. The Druid Tarbuckfix
  5. The anger of Sayleix the Sub Chief
  6. Attack on the An-field

Scenario1 The Route North

Nauseous Sextus and two of his centurae are building the Marching camp ahead of the main body of the legion when they are attacked by a small force of brigantes lead by the insane ArtorAskix.

The Prefect wants to write a poem but First Spear "Infelix" insists they ready for battle.

The lines deploy

My entire Celtic force

The Celts start with horse and skirmishers.

But the Decurion of the Ala Britannia charges into those chariots

The Romans take on the main Celtic line

A slugging match as the Ala come to help on the flank

The Romans start to destroy the Brigantes units

The Prefectus gives support from the rear ranks!

Only the Celtic cavalry are left and they submit to the Prefect.

Nauseous Sextus: Ode to a Sturgeon 62AD,
(as translated by un-celebrated Yorkshire poet Enoch Topaz Blythswick RN 1794)

Oh little marching fort,

The size of a small wart,
You are indeed the porte,
To our march into the Nort...
