Bridge Over the Wislonka, October 1914

Bridge Over the Wislonka

October 1914

Local villagers have informed Pioneer platoon commander Leutenant Karl Ungár that an intact bridge is located just 3km South on the Wisłonka near the confluence with the Vistula. Ungár has found the bridge, and on approach his platoon comes under rifle fire.  Ungár leads his men in a bayonet attack against the defenders and seizes the river crossing.  In the course of the night Cossacks try to retake the crossing with two counter-attacks, but they both fail because of the resistance of Ungár's men. A machine gun troop from IR 12 arrives as the first reinforcement after midnight, the bridgehead then being finally secured, with II./IR 83 reaching the river crossing at 4 a.m.

The terrain slopes gently down toward the river from both sides, with a swamp on either bank .  The river is not crossable by any other means than the bridge. The nearby house has a walled garden.

My version of the battlefield

Austrian blinds

The Russian sentry gets wind of something big approaching

Russian blinds advance on table

Lots of spotting rolls later

The Austrians focus on firepower in the opening stages

The hero shot as Leutnant Hans Schoup waves his service automatic around

Russian Lieutenant Boris isn't too impressed

The Austrians launch a bayonet charge after the Russian charge failed to contact.  Its a massacre

And the Austrian Leutnant burns up his cards killing them

The two Officers face each other as the charge gts serious  heavy losses on both sides byt the Russians roll poorly..  Hand Schoup is wounded!

But poor Boris is fatally wounded and captured!

The Russian super weapon, a heavy MG does little to help the cause of the Motherland

Its left to the Russian Korporal to attempt to save the day with a flank attack

Its another bloody result but the Russians are seen off

And Boris is marched off into captivity

A good game.  It enthused me for Mud and Blood again.  I will however give Blood and Valour a go with this period.
