Midshire Anarchy Game 4: It's my last Rollo

The Anarchy in Midshire: Game 3

Scenario 15: Royal Justice
Location 10: the Township of Spanker
Random Encounter 7:  Ancient Quincy the eccentric Hermit
Additional terrain roll 4 More Trees.

Factions: (3 for this scenario)

1. Hugh Biggot Earl of Midshire.  Controls the the great coastal fortress of Bumburgh.

3. Lord Rollo de Nestlé, of Castle Grope

4. Odo de Tanfield, Mercenary Captain

Rewards
6AP  +  Addition to retinue Master Bowman (8.  +1 to a bow unit's shoot roll)
The Mercenary Captain Odo de Tanfield is one of King Stephen's men.  He appeared in Midshire a few days ago with orders for the Earl to clear out one of the Empress supporters in this area, Lord Rollo of Castle Grope.

A force of 24 points raised by the Earl and the Mercenary Captain have been sent out and encountered Lord Rollo at the Township of Spanker. Rollo is supported by Mayor Gimpé of Spanker who has added to town's Militia to the force opposing the Earl.

It's an encounter battle on the road south of the town...

The Battlefield

Rollo and his Retinue are on the top edge, occupying Spanker.  The Earl enters from the lower edge below the stream.
The Earl gets on table

Lord Rollo advances on through Spanker

The Earl's Fierce Foot axemen on the road

Lord Rollo's bows hide behind the hedge and ditch.  What could go wrong?
More of his Lordship's bows hide in the town midden.  What is that smell?  A group of Yeoman spears advance in the centre...foolish?

The Axemen guess the charge distance...  Well inside the 8" they are released with a wild charge...

The Axemen are Lancashire games £2 for ten figures at Border Reiver 2017, (I found the receipt with them in the box)and I really like them.

Its a proper carve up

The Earl's crossbows face the bows behind the hedge, but manage to get the first shot in.  Two figures off.

The bows reply but its only one figure.

The Earl canters up to give "support" to his men.

End of turn 5 and the Crossbows hammer the bows again.  Another two.  Deadly shooting but the bows hang on.

The spears go head to head and its pretty even  The Earl's men just pip it.  Mayor Gimpe of Spanker is routed.
The Earl and Lord Rollo go for each other in a wild charge and countercharge.  7 hits vs 8.  The Earl is having this game his own way on the dice.  Rollo is thrown back.

The Crossbows kill another of Lord Rollo's  retinue

The Earl's axemen get stuck into the bows.  That is a clear walk over. The King's mercenary de Tanville is killed leading this unit.

The Bows break and rout and so does the Rollo's entire Retinue...

I give the Earl a chance to go for Lord Rollo at the last roll of the dice.  Rollo's entire unit is killed as his his Lordship.  Young Silas Grope is now Lord Grope, but the retinue has been destroyed.

And a last look at Rollo, his dice were appalling but he died with his spurs on... Irregular miniatures casualties as my battered markers

BUT:  an event card at the end of the game (well a dice roll actually but...) indicates that the Earl has suffered from an attack of the humours and died unexpectedly.  His heir is Jubal, the Young Earl.   The Mercenary has been replaced by the Sieur de Whitemoore, another of King Stephen's men, but on a reduced force due to the losses in this game.
The fifth game in the Anarchy will be "Who will rid me of this Corpulent Priest," where four of the six forces will engage to decide the future of the County.
