1917 Algy and the Last Stand of the DH2 Pushers

"A" Flight 70 Sqn, France 1917.  Scenario 14 has been rolled, the Last Stand of the Pushers, near the Lines at Albert.  The plot card drawn is 3 (Ginger gets lost)

Once again it's time to have a go at the dirty Fokkers.   The 24 Squadron DH2 Flight of Lt "Speedy" Simpson has been ambushed whilst artillery spotting over the Lines near Albert.

The Sopwith Camels of "A" Flight 70 Squadron have seen the fight and are flying in as latecomers, entering the table on an EDNA basis, testing to appear on a roll of 6 in turn 1, 5 or 6 in turn 2, etc...

DH2 Pilot "Ginger" Hepplethwaite has become separated from his colleagues, and he will appear on the German table edge on another Edna roll.  What could go wrong?

"A" Flight, 70 Sqn Sopwith Camels
Lt  "Jacko" Black
2nd Lt B. U. "Bumfluff " Farthingdale
2nd Lt B.T. "Bertie" Farthingdale
2nd Lt "Wally" Wilson

B Flight, Sopwith Camels
Lt "Bingo" Brunton

2nd Lt "Gubber" Gosling
2nd Lt "Susan" Lazy
2nd Lt "Squiffy" Simpson

DH2 Fight 24 Sqn
Lt. Speedy Simpson (Squiffy's brother)
2nd Lt "Fatty" Finch
2nd Lt "Armpits" Armstrong
2nd Lt Ginger Hepplethwaite  (Also enters the table on an Edna roll, from the German Lines side)

Jasta 7, the Pumpernickel Circus
The Royal Prussian Jagdstaffel is a hunting group, flying DR1 Fokker Triplanes and Albatros DV.  Leo and his Junge manner are a tough proposition, even for the Sopwith Camels.

And... 6 plot cards
1.  Quiggles and the Kraut Countess
2.  Bertie between the lines
3.  Ginger gets lost
4.  Colonel Raymond's gin supplies
5.  Algy takes it rough
6.  His bottle is gone!

DH2 Fight 24 Sqn artillery spotting on the Line

Jasta 7 come in high past the balloon line.

"Speedy" turns his boys around, trying to form up, but Ginger is missing...

And the Jasta are on them.  Some of the Germans drop low to engage.

"Fatty" puts up a fight.  Well done that large fellow.

But Armpits Armstrong is less successful and spirals down

Alas poor Armpits goes nose in.  To be fair its how he would have wanted to go...

The Jasta hunt "Fatty" and "Speedy," pretty much getting in each others way

Leo Pumpernickel the C.O in his red Triplane comes in high

Speedy is shot down as Fatty gets on the tail of an Albatros.  With amazing luck he shoots it down.  Good work hefty boy...
Meanwhile a second Albatros drops onto his tail.
"Fatty" is the last Pusher pilot left

Finally Ginger rolls his Edna and gets on table.
He keeps the balloon between his DH2 and the closing Germans.
I do regret that this is my home made balloon and not the bought one...
Ginger's movement card comes out and he dives forward to try to pass under the Germans at speed, past that ropey balloon.  Its a clever move but risky.  Sure enough he hits the balloon cable.  Its one of those "roll anything but a one" moments!

And finally the Sopwith Camels come on table.  Jacko and his boys seem to be one short however.  Something I only realised after they made a move.  A dice roll indicates that its "Squiffy" who is late to the party.  He is placed a move behind them on the baseline.

With three of the Jasta off watching Ginger's crash Leo has split his force against seven closing Camels (and one messing about further back)

"Fatty" still holds on but the DH2 is clearly now shot to pieces.  He runs for home.  Leo and his Jasta are scattered and too low, at a huge tactical disadvantage.  He turns for home.

Fatty dives under the approaching Camels, as Squiffy comes on table.  Can`t really blame the Germans for bugging out.  They destroyed two of the pushers whilst Ginger destroyed his own!  The DH2 flight downed two Germans, so more even than I thought it would be.
The After Incident Report shows that Lt. "Speedy" Simpson survived the fight and landed his DH2 intact, whilst incredibly 2nd Lt "Ginger" Hepplethwaite walked away after hitting the balloon wire. It is possible that he grabbed the wire mid flight and slid down to safety.  That left poor "Armpits" Armstrong, Killed in Action.

Both German Pilots were killed but Leo can celebrate this one as a victory, mainly because it took the Camels five Edna rolls to get on table.
